About this Map
Data comes from NASA EONET and shows wildfire events worldwide from the past year.
What is NASA EONET? EONET (Earth Observatory Natural Event Tracker) is a curated catalog of significant natural events, aggregating detections and reports from multiple NASA and partner sources. It tracks events over time with an ID and timestamped geometry, rather than every individual satellite hotspot.
Emissions context: Wildfires and other open biomass burning release large amounts of CO₂. Global estimates vary by year, but are typically on the order of 6–8 gigatonnes of CO₂ annually. Net climate impact depends on regrowth and fuel type; emissions from peat and deforestation can persist in the atmosphere much longer.
Each marker represents an event's most recently reported location; popups show the event date range and, when available, reported area burned.
This map is for awareness and exploration only. For local alerts and safety guidance, consult your regional emergency services.
